Jan Ladislav Dussek, Lord Howe's Favorite Hornpipe: Dussek in Publishing

By Anneke Van Slyke, Erin Perry, and Margie Raupp

Dussek & Corri Publishing

During his time in London, Dussek married Sophia Corri, musician and daughter of music publisher Domenico Corri. Dussek joined her father in his publishing company, establishing Corri, Dussek & Co in 1789. Dussek was able to publish his music exclusively with his company. However, this backfired on Dussek when the company went bankrupt, leaving Corri, Dussek, and their business partner Lorenzo DaPonte, the famed librettist of many of Mozart's famous operas, in financial troubles. DaPonte recounted that although Dussek’s piano works sold well, the company was in a large amount of debt, and they lacked the business knowledge and sense to save it. As a result of this bankruptcy, Dussek fled to Hamburg, leaving his daughter and wife behind.
