Academic Cultural Events Series

CitationBette Lou Higgins, The Past We Inherit: A history of Baldwin-Wallace College 1835 - 1974 (printed by the author, 1974), 102.

Culture was added in 1962 when The Academic Cultural Events series was established. The ACES group and Program Events series was established. The ACES group and Program Board supply the students with extracurricular functions such as movies, lectures, concerts and exhibits. It must be noted however, that curricular culture is NOT lacking by any means considering the number of presentations of lectures, plays and exhibits and concerts by B-W people in the Theatre, Art, Sociology, Conservatory and English Departments – just to name a few.

All-College Reception

Citation: A. Wesley Roehm, ed., Grindstone (Berea, OH: Baldwin-Wallace College, 1928), p. 120.

Here we have the first opportunity of the year to meet as a social group, attired in our best. This event also provides us with the opportunity of getting acquainted and of learning who's who in our college world. The faculty acts as host, while the students assume the role of invited guests.

Alumni Song

Citation: Harold A. Speckmann, ed., Grindstone (Berea, OH: Baldwin-Wallace College, 1914), p. 137.

Praise to thee, our Alma Mater,
Noble Baldwin-Wallace College,
Where from far and near we gather,
Praise to thee we bring;
God preserve thee, we will bless thee,
Always honor, ne'er forget thee;
Ever sacred be thy memory,
Baldwin-Wallace College.

Art Department

Citation: Thomas. A. Stiger, ed., The X Ray (Berea, OH: Baldwin University, 1896), p. 47.

No Department of Baldwin University has made greater progress during the last two years than that of Art, or has proceeded upon its work in a more pleasing and thorough manner.

Art for many years seemed to be without a place in B. U., but to-day, under the instructor, Alberta E. James; it has risen from deplorableness to the condition in which you find it at present.

Students who have never visited this department had better do so at once, for you are neglecting one of the greatest opportunities offered.

If you are laboring under the impression that there is nothing in Art to interest you, your case is a very pitiable one, for which we are all willing to sacrifice something in order that your understanding with reference to things beautiful shall be of such a kind that the danger of an unexpected explosion of ignorance in the presence of your most respectful friends will be guarded.

We assure you that a half hour spent in investigation will prove that there is more in free-hand drawing than you had ever dreamed of before.

The class in out-door sketching can show you enough in ten minutes to make you drunk with wonder.

You will observe paintings from still life, landscapes, flowers from nature and from copy, wood carving and china decoration.

Take notice of the draperies and casts to draw from, and the excellent variety of studies from nature for use of pupils.

If, after observing these things you are still wondering and saying to yourself, "What good to the world are such things?" go take thyself to the nearest insane asylum and give yourself up as a fool; or, if after observing the grandeur thereof you are still saying, "Isn't it elegant?" go at once and make arrangements to begin work.

Autumn and Old B. U.

Citation: "Autumn and Old B. U.," in Baldwin University Alumni Songs, n.d.

List, to the music of voices bright and gay;
The shouts ring clear for old B. U.
'Tis Registration Day;
A mighty sound bursts on the air,
By all but Freshies learned.
''The Rocks" have simply clapped their hands-
Their o'd friends have returned.
Dame Autumn whispers to the trees,
She has glad news to tel
Of students come and students gone,
She loved them all so well.

Chorus: For Autumn is loyal to our old B. U.
Her forests all unfold
In splendor brown and gold.
The sun's bright rays
Fill all the happy golden days
For the students of our old B. U.

Then comes co'd winter, and how he blusters round,
His frown is dark and drives our team
From off the football ground.
He saunters round the tennis court
And has in mind, we think,
To turn that most delightful spot
Into a skating rink.
But Autumn smiles a warm, sweet smile.
And Winter hides away,
To further schemes and form bold plans
For use a later day.

Chorus.
But Winter's joys and duties come and go;
We delve in books of ancient lore
That we may wiser grow,
'Till balmy days of Spring entice,
With hearts both light and gay,
Youth seeks for those enchanted spots
Where Nature's beauties play,
Then parting from the hearts we've bound
With friendship's golden chain,
Fair Summer fills with dreams, the days
Till Autumn comes again.
